Campbell Hall Punter Returns Dividends

Campbell Hall High defeated L. A. Lutheran, 48-0, Friday in an 8-man contest that ended on a bizarre play in which a punter returned his own punt 46 yards for a touchdown.
With Campbell Hall leading, 42-0, in the third quarter of the nonleague game at Campbell Hall, sophomore punter Don White booted the ball straight in the air, then grabbed it after it landed on L. A. Lutheran’s side of the line of scrimmage and bounced back across the line. As his teammates and coaches on both sides of the field watched in amazement, White scooted around right end, evaded the few L. A. Lutheran players who bothered to try to stop him and ran for a touchdown.
After a brief conference, the officials allowed the play to stand and credited Campbell Hall with a touchdown that ended the game because of the 45-point rule.
“It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in 23 years of football,” Campbell Hall Coach Kirk Duncan said. “I’ve seen a million football games and I’ve never seen something like that happen.”
Campbell Hall (2-2) dominated the game, rolling up 390 yards in total offense to 103 for L. A. Lutheran (1-3).
Campbell Hall’s Ty Leatherman completed 10 of 16 passes for 177 yards, 3 touchdowns and rushed 6 times for 40 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Pete Robbins had touchdown receptions of five and seven yards.
