PAPAL POTATOES

I hope this is the last letter you receive regarding Pope John Paul II’s meals in L.A.
Mrs. Deborah Grumbine wrote a fine letter championing a bit of indulgence (Saturday Letters, Sept. 26). It will renew one’s strength to continue the good fight. Anyone who can find quotes in the Bible that counteract this nation’s recent obsession with sobriety is my friend.
My argument is with her closing in Spanish, “ Viva la Papa .” Translation: Long live the potato. Did el Papa eat potatoes while in L.A.?
