Orange County Prep Football : Brown Gives Servite a Win, 17-10

Times Staff Writer

The football teams of Servite and Fountain Valley high schools played a game of attrition Saturday, a game that included two blocked field goals, four interceptions and three fumbles.

Luckily for Servite, it had running back Derek Brown, who rose above all that and led the Friars to a 17-10 nonleague victory in front of 3,500 in Glover Stadium.

Brown, a junior, rushed 136 yards in 19 carries and scored on two big plays, basically all on his own.

With Servite trailing, 7-0, midway through the second quarter, Brown took a handoff from quarterback Jason Frank and headed directly into the Fountain Valley defensive line. Brown was hit hard but kept his balance, then broke two more tackles in the secondary and was off on a 51-yard touchdown run. Pat Blottiaux’s conversion kick tied the score at 7-7.

Blottiaux kicked a 42-yard field goal with 5:20 left in the third quarter. That was followed by Fountain Valley kicker Derek Mahoney’s 42-yarder that tied the score at 10-10 with 1:23 left in the third.

The teams then fell into a few minutes of giveaway. Early in the fourth quarter, a 17-yard touchdown pass from Frank to Oscar Ford was called back because of a holding penalty.

Frank’s next pass was intercepted by Josh Young on Fountain Valley’s 18. Two plays later, Baron running back Kedric Powe fumbled after a 14-yard pass reception. Chris Melodia recovered for Servite on the Barons’ 48.

Frank responded by throwing another interception, this one to Rick Mock, who returned the ball 45 yards to the Servite 30.

Mock had an exceptional game. He also blocked two Servite field goal attempts in the first half.

With good field position, Fountain Valley immediately fumbled. This time it was running back Courtney Dubar who lost the ball after a five-yard gain. Servite linebacker Mike Petko recovered. Dubar finished the game with 99 yards in 16 carries.

Servite managed to keep the ball for five consecutive plays and moved the ball to the Fountain Valley 40. The big play was a 30-yard pass from Frank to Ford on a third down and six.

Frank’s next pass went to Brown at the Fountain Valley 28. Brown broke one tackle when he caught the ball and another as he headed up field. Then he outran another defender to the end zone.

Fountain Valley’s first touchdown came after a 16-play drive and was capped by four-yard run by running back Derek Tuescher.
