The Semiconductor Industry Assn., noting a stronger-than-expected pickup in demand, predicted strong sales ahead for manufacturers of computer chips. The trade group predicted that 1987 worldwide shipments will jump 21.8% to $32.1 billion. In April, the association forecast a 17.5% rise in shipments to $31 billion. The SIA’s forecast is based on shipments by chip makers in the United States, Japan and Europe.
