A man was killed in a hit-and-run accident in National City early Sunday morning, according to California Highway Patrol officer Richard Clopine.
Florecio Melendrez, 51, of Huntington Park, stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 805 just south of Sweetwater Road about 6 a.m. to help the driver of a car, which had overturned in the far left lane, authorities said. While crossing the freeway, he was struck by a car, according to Clopine.
Melendrez was taken by Life Flight helicopter to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he died at 1 p.m.
Witnesses said a black, older-model car sped from the scene after striking Melendrez. Anyone with information is asked to call the California Highway Patrol.
