A new charity is being created with the goal of erecting a statue in honor of Long Beach police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
A dinner party on Nov. 18 will launch the Long Beach Police and Firefighters Charities Inc., a nonprofit group that will spearhead the fund-raising drive, according to a spokesman for the Ramada Renaissance Hotel, where the event will be held.
The statue will be inscribed, “Let us never forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.” Organizers said the fund drive has the support of Police Chief Lawrence Binkley, Fire Chief Ben Souders and the presidents of the firefighters and police officers associations.
Tickets are available from the hotel catering department or the Long Beach Police Officers Assn.
