Tennis Roundup : McEnroe Loses Control--and Exhibition to Lendl

Ivan Lendl won the final five points of the third-set tiebreaker Wednesday night to defeat John McEnroe, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6, in the $500,000 AT&T; Tennis Challenge exhibition tournament at Atlanta.

McEnroe self-destructed in the tiebreaker with unforced errors, double-faulting to take Lendl to match point. Lendl hit a backhand service return down the line to end the 2-hour 47-minute match.

Earlier, Stefan Edberg of Sweden beat Ulf Stenlund, also of Sweden, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, and Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia defeated Sweden’s Mikael Pernfors, 7-6, 6-4.

McEnroe was leading, 5-4, in the final set when he failed to return a second serve that he thought was out. It was ruled an ace, and McEnroe threw his racket, which bounced in the stands and hit a fan. McEnroe received a warning.

Unseeded John Fitzgerald of Australia upset second-seeded Scott Davis, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round of the $150,000 Queensland Open at Brisbane, Australia.

In other opening-round matches, top-seeded Pat Cash of Australia downed Peter Carter, another Australian, John Frawley of Australia defeated seventh-seeded Gary Muller of South Africa, 6-4, 6-4; Tony Mmoh of Nigeria beat Sammy Giammalva, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, and No. 5-seeded Kelly Evernden of New Zealand downed Charlton Eagle of Australia, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.

In the second round, Marcel Freeman ousted sixth-seeded Peter Doohan of Australia, 6-3, 6-1; Australian Brod Dyke eliminated third-seeded Wally Masur, also of Australia, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, and eighth-seeded Eric Jelen of West Germany turned back Darren Cahill of Australia, 6-4, 6-3.

Dan Goldie upset top-seeded Mats Wilander, 7-6, 6-3, in the $303,400 WCT Scottsdale Open, and Mexico’s Jorge Lozano beat second-seeded Tim Mayotte, 6-4, 6-3, at Scottsdale, Ariz.
