Fine Suspended in Police Stop Case

Citing a woman’s fear in the wake of a California Highway Patrol officer’s arrest on a murder charge, a judge suspended her $25 fine for failure to yield to a law enforcement officer.
El Cajon Municipal Judge Robert E. May issued the guilty verdict and sentence Wednesday after a four-hour trial. He also found Christina King, 23, of El Cajon, not guilty of speeding.
King said she refused to stop immediately for a sheriff’s deputy May 25 because of publicity surrounding the Dec. 27, 1986, slaying of 20-year-old Cara Knott. She didn’t pull over until she reached a store where she worked.
Former CHP Officer Craig Peyer is accused of killing Knott after stopping her about 8:45 p.m. as she was traveling home to El Cajon from her boyfriend’s house in Escondido. He remains free on $1 million bail.
