CNN MEETS REAGAN

Acceding to repeated requests by Cable News Network for an exclusive interview, President Reagan on Friday fielded questions from two CNN correspondents for a taped interview that will be aired today. It will be aired twice, at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Reagan’s 28-minute session was unusual in that not even the White House press office could immediately recall his last such serious interview with a network correspondent. The interview was conducted at the White House.

CNN anchor Bernard Shaw and White House correspondent Charles Bierbauer questioned Reagan about arms control, U.S. Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork, his Strategic Defense Initiative; the Persian Gulf situation and the War Powers Act, a CNN spokeswoman said.

Bill Headline, CNN bureau chief in Washington, said his network had often requested a Reagan interview--”but not in an obnoxious manner, I hope”--and that the President on several occasions had told Shaw he’d be willing to do one when and if he had the time.

Finally, Headline said, White House press secretary Marlin Fitzwater notified CNN on Wednesday that Reagan would do the interview Friday morning.
