CBS, UNION TO MEET WITH MEDIATORS

Negotiators for CBS and a major technical union will meet with federal mediators Oct. 22-23 in an effort to resolve differences over a CBS contract proposal, a union official said Friday.

The meeting in Washington was called after CBS made what it said was its final proposal to officials of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, representing 1,500 technicians at CBS.

The offer was made at the close of contract talks in Phoenix on Sept. 30, when the union’s current three-year contract expired. Union members have continued working pending developments.

A key issue that must be resolved is CBS’ proposal that it be allowed unlimited hiring of daily employees, said Michael Deiso, business manager of the union’s New York local. No strike vote has been taken yet.

“I don’t know,” Deiso said when asked about the possibility of a walkout. “Our whole strategy has been to get a fair agreement without a strike.”
