GNP Not Very Tasty

Thank you, on behalf of the billion hungry people on our planet, for your Sept. 24 article (“Reagan Administration Favors Plan to Increase Funds for World Bank”). It cited the efforts of Rep. Tony P. Hall (D-Ohio) to redirect the World Bank’s lending to programs that will help, rather than hurt, the poor.

His letter, signed by 190 senators and representatives and calling for the bank to double its anti-poverty lending, is a triumph of clear thinking rising above the confused sea of politics. If the world’s largest development institution does not know that you can’t feed your child gross national product, this will tell them.
