Never known as a man to mince words, Chicago Symphony Orchestra music director Sir Georg Solti once told Chicago civic leaders that the city should erect a statue to him. On Saturday it did, finishing off a weekend of celebrations in the conductor’s honor. “I am really moved and really happy,” said Solti as the 9-foot bronze bust was unveiled in the city’s Lincoln Park. “This is really too much to take. I am frightened that this is all people will see when they come to the park,” the Hungarian-born maestro said, visibly moved. The conductor was feted Friday night in a special concert by the orchestra, at which he conducted and gave a rare keyboard performance with pianist Murray Perahia. Solti was also presented the Chicago Medal of Merit by Mayor Harold Washington.
