Three doctors who owned an abandoned radiation therapy clinic have been charged in the release of radioactive material that contaminated 34 people in the Brazilian city of Goiania. Orlando Alves Teixeira, Criseide Dourado and Carlos Bezzeril, directors of the therapy clinic, were indicted on charges of causing grave injury. If convicted, they face two to eight years in jail. Thirty-four people remain hospitalized, at least three in critical condition, after being exposed to material released from a container of cesium 137, a radioactive isotope used in cancer research and radiation therapy. The container was found in the abandoned clinic by scavengers and sold to a local scrap-metal dealer.
