Free staple foods such as cheese, butter, honey, flour, rice and cornmeal will be distributed in La Palma Tuesday at a monthly food disbursement at the La Palma Community Center.
U.S. Department of Agriculture surplus commodities will be distributed from 3 to 5 p.m. at the center on Walker Street in Central Park. According to Janet Cates, city recreation supervisor, only about 38% of residents eligible to receive the free surplus food are participating in the program.
To qualify for the giveaway, participants must prove city residency (driver’s license or other picture identification with a recent utility bill will work), and they must meet poverty level requirements.
Individual recipient income cannot exceed $8,250 a year, and two-person household income must not surpass $11,100. For each additional person per household, individual income cannot top $2,850 a year.
Eligible residents in other county areas may participate in USDA Surplus Commodity distribution in their own communities. To learn of other distribution points, call the St. Vincent de Paul Food Distribution Center at (714) 771-1343 or the Community Development Council at (714) 540-9293.
