Tustin 14, Corona del Mar 13--Tustin opened defense of its Sea View League championship with a narrow win in front of 1,100 at Northrup Field.
A tough Tustin defense, led by linebacker Jeff Dart, sparked the Tillers (4-2, 1-0). The senior linebacker recovered three fumbles.
After trailing for most of the game, Tustin scored its tying touchdown with 8:45 left on a two-yard run by tailback Lani Machado. The winning point was kicked by Jason Lavin.
Machado’s touchdown run capped a 13-play drive. He led Tiller runners with 76 yards in 22 carries.
Tustin took a 7-0 lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter when halfback Chris Gankema went five yards for a touchdown and Lavin kicked the extra point.
Corona del Mar (1-5, 0-1) came back with 10 second-quarter points on a 31-yard field goal by Kevin Maas, Matt Patterson’s five-yard scoring run with 1:01 left in the half, and Mass’ extra point kick.
The Sea Kings took a six-point lead when, with 2:08 left, Pat Callahan kicked a 30-yard field goal to make it 13-7.
Patterson led all rushers with 97 yards in 23 carries.
