Ukrainian Doomed for War Crimes

MOSCOW — A Soviet court has sentenced a Ukrainian to death by firing squad on charges of being a Nazi accomplice who committed murder and torture during World War II, the official news agency Tass said Monday.
Ivan Goncharuk fought in an insurrectionary Ukrainian nationalist group, considered by the authorities to have been established under Nazi orders, from the summer of 1944 to the end of 1945, Tass said.
“About 50 victims and witnesses testified at the trial--which lasted almost a week--that the criminal’s daily ‘work’ consisted of murder, torture, arson and plunder,” Tass said.
The trial was held in the town of Kamen-Kashirsky, which lies northwest of Kiev in the Ukraine, the agency said.
