Immigrant Rights Coalition Joins Campaign to Oust INS Official Ezell

A campaign to oust INS Western Region Commissioner Harold Ezell gained added momentum Tuesday night with an endorsement of the effort by Los Angeles’ main coalition of immigrants’ rights groups.
Citing controversial statements and policies by Ezell that the coalition members termed “anti-immigrant,” the Coalition for Humane Immigrants Rights of Los Angeles voted unanimously to write members of the California congressional delegation, urging that Ezell be fired from his post with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
The coalition stand was taken at the urging of former state Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso, one of the three high-court justices retired by voters in November. He has been at the forefront of the campaign to oust Ezell.
Saying that Ezell “can’t do his job,” Reynoso told coalition representatives that the regional commissioner’s statements and policies have led to a loss of confidence in the eyes of community groups.
INS officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday. But an INS spokesman has denounced the allegations against Ezell.
