In Tom Redburn’s article “Campaign Debate Over Deficit Curiously Tame” (Part I, Oct. 19), I was alarmed that the candidates for the 1988 presidential election are reluctant to take a firm stance on how to remedy our tremendously overbloated deficit.
The $3-trillion deficit is unacceptable and must be reduced. It should be treated as a top priority presidential campaign issue; instead the candidates have been successful in shuffling by it, treating it as a secondary issue or simply not addressing the issue at all.
Let’s hope that one of the candidates will show leadership and true concern over the welfare of this country. This can be accomplished by keeping priorities in their proper order--that is first and foremost coming up with a workable plan to reduce the deficit.
