The Pacific 10 and Big Ten football conferences, tied up in the lucrative Rose Bowl pact, announced unanimous opposition to a major-college football playoff.
In announcing the decision, commissioners Wayne Duke of the Big Ten and Tom Hansen of the Pac-10 stressed their preference for the current postseason bowl-game structure when they voted on the issue at a San Diego meeting last week.
Seventeen of the 20 members were at a meeting at Big Ten headquarters in Chicago and three others later concurred with the vote.
The conference executives are concerned with probable expansion of any two-game playoff if initiated, and opposed the additional stress that participating student-athletes would feel in their studies.
