Local News in Brief : AIDS Facts in Data Bank

Information on AIDS is now available--anonymously--on campus computers at California State University, Long Beach.
When users log on, they are automatically asked if they want AIDS information, and those who do can tap into a data bank offering general information about the disease, updated national and local statistics, a general AIDS knowledge quiz and a guide to community services.
There is also a question-and-answer section, where a question left in the system will be answered within 72 hours.
The program, thought to be the first of its kind on any Cal State system campus, was developed by psychology professor Fen Rhodes, director of the campus AIDS Education Project, and psychology graduate student Richard Wolitski, and made its debut last month.
Rhodes said from 20 to 25 people tap into it each day. “We were trying,” he said, “to come up with a way students could ask for information any time in a non-threatening environment.”
