Trumpeting the Winners of Music Contest

A violinist, a trombonist and a bassoonist are the winners of the third annual Pasadena Instrumental Competition.

Sponsored by the Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, a fund-raising support group of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the competition offers cash prizes and scholarships in a variety of categories. The prizes will be awarded at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Garland Theater of the Polytechnic School in Pasadena. The winners will also perform, with a reception following the concert.

The winners of the $2,000 first prizes are violinist Elisa Barston, a student at USC of Robert Lipsett; trombonist Christy Belicki Pearson, a USC alumna and member of the American Youth Symphony, now studying with Terry Cravens; and bassoonist Karen Pierson, a masters student at USC studying with Norman Herzburg.

Second prizes of $1,000 went to violinists Qi-xin Pu and Steven Copes, and clarinetist Jeff Elmasian. The $1,000 Barbara Ehrlich Award, given to a competitor from the Pasadena area, was awarded to Karen Pierson.

The featured instrument this year was the alto saxophone, and a $1,000 prize in that category went to Bill Wilson, a student of Jerry Luedders at Cal State, Northridge.

Scholarships to seven different summer music programs were also awarded.

Judges were trombonist Ralph Sauer, violinist Mark Baranov, and trumpeter Donald Green--all of the Los Angeles Philharmonic--and violinist Stuart Canin and flutist James Walker.
