A 9 1/2-month-old girl was upgraded to serious condition Saturday after being shot in the chest when her father’s gun discharged accidentally, Sheriff’s Sgt. Charles Curtis said.
Ashley Denise Dominguez of Spring Valley was taken by her parents to Grossmont Hospital and then transferred by Life Flight to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery Thursday to remove the bullet.
She was later transferred to Children’s Hospital, where she is now.
The infant had been sitting on a kitchen counter while her mother, Vicki, washed dishes. Her father, Michael, a 24-year-old Marine drill instructor, had just finished cleaning his 9mm semi-automatic handgun. He had reloaded it and was putting the gun into a box for storage when it discharged.
The bullet went through the infant’s left arm and into her upper chest, Curtis said.
