Poll Backs Defense Cuts

NEW YORK — Forty-three percent of Americans believe defense spending should be cut to reduce the federal budget deficit, but only 9% favor tax increases, a poll released Saturday by Newsweek magazine said. Twenty-three percent of the 500 people surveyed by phone thought cuts in non-defense spending should be the main approach to trimming the deficit.
