Atty. Gen. Meese

Recently, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) charged that Judge Douglas Ginsburg’s withdrawal as a nominee to the Supreme Court was caused by some “gutless wonders” in the White House. President Reagan stated that he could not find any “gutless wonders” on his staff.
I suggest that President Reagan instead should look for a “brainless wonder” on his staff. If he difficulty finding one, he should look more closely at the office of the attorney general.
In just a year, Edwin Meese III has been involved in three fiascoes. First was the “investigation” of Lt. Col. Oliver North and his cronies in which the attorney general allowed North to shred documents while his “investigation” was being carried out. According to North, he shredded documents while the “investigators” were in his office.
Second was the Wedtech case in which Meese has been investigated for a conflict of interest.
Third was the Ginsburg nomination which was pushed through by Meese and which later led to embarrassment for the President.
