Chicago’s most famous folk music club closed the doors for good New Year’s Day. Holstein’s, run by the brothers Holstein for the last seven years, had been a constant attraction on Lincoln Avenue’s night life strip on the city’s North Side, but Fred Holstein (who also picks a mean guitar) said the club was closing not for financial reasons but because he and his brothers Ed and Alan want to move on to another endeavor. “We all just wanted to do something different after seven years,” Fred said. Many regulars were sad the club was closing, but the Holstein brothers had no regrets. “I don’t feel sad,” Ed said. “This place has been great to us and I’m looking forward to not having to work so hard.”
