A decline in divorce filings in Cook County, Ill., has been attributed to October’s stock market crash. “A lot of women who had been talking to us about filing a divorce called back after the stock market crash and said they wanted to wait until the value of the family’s stock portfolio went back up,” attorney Bernard Rinella said. “They didn’t want to go get a divorce when the value of their portfolio was down by one-fourth or even one one-third, because the wife would get less money,” Rinella said. New divorce cases filed in Cook County in 1987 totaled 24,493, down from 24,593 the previous year, records show.
