A 32-year-old woman was released from the hospital Tuesday after she escaped serious injury when her medallion necklace partly deflected a bullet aimed at her chest, police said.
Ernestina Valdez of San Diego was treated for a minor wound to the chest at UC San Diego Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Valdez told police she had been visiting a friend Monday at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Beech Street, where they argued and he shot her once with a handgun.
Neighbors had reported hearing an argument and gunshots, and officers found Valdez near the intersection of Beech Street and 10th Avenue about 9 p.m.
Police arrested a man sitting in a car in front of the complex.
Secondino Cardena, 40, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Police said a .22-caliber pistol was found on Cardena.
