International Paper’s profit increased 33% to $407 million for 1987, compared to the previous year. Net sales jumped 42% to $7.8 billion over 1986 figures. The Purchase, N.Y.-based company said the results reflect a year’s contribution from Hammermill Paper Co.; strong demand for paper, timber and wood; improved productivity of its mills, and the reduced value in the dollar, which allowed the firm to “recapture and expand our export markets.”
