Benny Goodman knew the way to Carnegie Hall--practice, practice, practice. Clarinetist Bob Wilbur and a band he assembled have been doing just that preparing for a Saturday night performance at the hall commemorating the Swing King’s first concert there on Jan. 16, 1938. That performance, Carnegie’s first-ever jazz concert, was captured on vinyl and is now a pricey collector’s item. It featured Goodman and his band plus a jam session and included musicians from the Duke Ellington and Count Basie bands. Saturday’s show will feature Goodman arrangements of his popular recordings. The bandleader died in 1986 at the age of 77.
