A lawsuit that had blocked plans to build a multimillion-dollar education and recreation center next to the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove has been settled out of court. Dorothy Malis of Costa Mesa and Pat Howard of Hesperia filed the suit late last year in Orange County Superior Court. They alleged that asbestos insulation had been found in 19 apartments they bought from the church and that the cost of removing the asbestos could be as much as $300,000, making it prohibitively expensive for them to move the buildings to Gardena and Long Beach for low-cost housing. In exchange for dropping the suit, Malis and Howard will get back their $62,700 payment on the property. An independent investigator has found no asbestos in the buildings, and a Crystal Cathedral spokesman said the apartments will be moved somewhere in Orange County for low-cost housing.
