Canyons Women May Abbreviate Season

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team will cancel the remainder of its games if sophomore point guard Ann Jeffries does not rejoin the lineup, Lee Smelser, Canyons athletic director, said Tuesday.
Canyons, which has only five players, canceled a Western State Conference game against Glendale last Thursday after Jeffries and Wendy Steele had been sidelined because of illness. Cougar Coach Randy Yamanouye said he will find out this week whether Jeffries, who will undergo testing for mononucleosis, will be out indefinitely.
“We’re pretty close to pulling the plug on this whole thing,” Smelser said. “Rather than play week to week, we’d rather just wait for next year.”
Canyons (1-8, 0-4 in the WSC) started the season with seven players. The Cougars were reduced to five players after Nancy Serrano decided not to play and Yamanouye told freshman point guard Lisa Miranda to leave the team.
Yamanouye took over a Cougar team that finished last in the WSC’s Southern Division last season. Canyons was 3-17, 2-9 in conference play under Coach Frank Wright, who was not rehired after last season.
