AT&T; said it would close a major telecommunications manufacturing plant employing 3,300 workers in Winston-Salem, N.C., where it has operated for more than 40 years. The closing of the factory--part of AT&T;’s network systems division--will take place over the next few years, and was attributed by company officials to excess capacity in its manufacturing operations. A company spokesman said AT&T; has not yet decided how the employees--about 1% of the telephone giant’s total work force--will be furloughed, but said about 1,000 are eligible for pensions while an unspecified number of others could be transfered.
