SACRAMENTO — The California Highway Patrol said Wednesday that it is recommending a rocket fuel route to Vandenberg Air Force base that bypasses central Santa Maria.
The Highway Patrol said it will hold three public hearings before making a final decision on the proposed route, which would add California 166 between Santa Maria and Maricopa.
A companion proposal to permanently delete from the list California 134 in Los Angeles County and U.S. 101 between 134 and California 246 near Buellton will also be on the hearing agendas.
The CHP hearings will be March 22 in Maricopa, March 23 in Santa Maria and March 24 in Ventura.
The proposed routes would bring the cargo tankers into California via Interstate 40 to Barstow and along the following route: I-15 in Barstow to Lenwood Road; Lenwood Road north to California 58; California 58 to Mojave; California 14 south to California 138 at Lancaster; California 138 west to I-5 at Gorman; I-5 north to California 166 at Mettler; California 166 west to U.S. 101 at Santa Maria; U.S. 101 south to Buellton; California 246 west to Vandenberg.
