Southern Utah Beats USIU to Keep Alive Two Streaks

SAN DIEGO — Ted Thomas scored 39 points and had 16 rebounds Wednesday night to lead Southern Utah to a 102-97 nonconference men’s college basketball victory over U.S. International University at Golden Hall.
Rhet Parsons added 22 points for Southern Utah (13-6), which won its seventh consecutive game. USIU (7-14) lost its third straight.
Russ Heicke scored 26 points for USIU, which led, 49-48, at halftime. Southern Utah took the lead for good on Derrick Williams’ two free throws with 6:33 remaining.
BASEBALL
The 50th anniversary of San Diego State baseball will be celebrated with a banquet Saturday night at Tia Juana Tilly’s restaurant in San Diego. Bobby Meacham of the New York Yankees, Bud Black of the Kansas City Royals, Dave Smith of the Houston Astros and Al Newman of the Minnesota Twins are among the former Aztecs scheduled to attend.
There will be an autograph session from 5 to 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour immediately following. Dinner is scheduled for 7 p.m. An auction that will include items from the major leaguers as well as the Aztecs will be held.

The La Mesa National Little League is planning a dinner dance for former players, parents, manager and coaches Friday night at the La Mesa Community Center. The party will kick off the 35th season in La Mesa. Proceeds will help build Jarrett Meeker Field, which is being renovated to serve as the La Mesa Little League home.
