The Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation has raised $52,000 through a campaign that encouraged taxpayers to donate their California tax rebate checks to the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
The foundation, a private, nonprofit agency that raises money to support the school district, surpassed its goal of $50,000. The money will be used to buy books, science lab equipment, computers and other educational supplies.
“Giving tax rebates to the public schools, especially during the holiday season, is a vote of confidence for public education,” said foundation President Margaret Rose Shultz.
