Fred Jones scored 28 points and Danny Martin added 26 to lead Cal State Bakersfield to an 83-78 men’s basketball victory over Chapman College Friday night in Bakersfield.
Jones, who was averaging 9.1 points a game, scored 17 in the first half. Martin, who was averaging 9.9 points, made 5 of 10 three-point shots as Bakersfield (10-5, 2-0) won its seventh straight and handed Chapman (10-5, 1-1) its first loss in six games.
“There’s no question those guys (Jones and Martin) had the games of their lives,” said Chapman Coach Kevin Wilson, “but what really hurt us was Bakersfield’s quickness. Both their guards out front were quicker then ours, and their quickness inside killed us.”
The Roadrunners scored the game’s first eight points and led at halftime, 39-34.
The Panthers got as close as one point a couple of times in the second half, the last time when Mike Minier hit a 10-foot jumper to make the score 58-57 with 8:43 left. But Bakersfield went on one more 8-0 streak, and opened up as much as a 12-point advantage (79-67 on Ray Burris’ three-pointer at 2:47).
Kelly Huston led the Panthers with 24 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Dave Roth added 21, Russ Ortega 15 and Bryan Richetto 14.
