USD to Play Santa Clara at Home Tonight

SAN DIEGO — Last year’s West Coast Athletic Conference regular-season and postseason tournament champions meet tonight when the University of San Diego plays host to Santa Clara at 7:30 in the USD Sports Center.
USD (8-8 overall) is off to a poor start in its effort to repeat its regular-season title, having lost its first three conference games, the latest on Thursday to San Francisco, 75-59. USD, which shot only 32% in the first half, had its 11-game home conference winning streak snapped.
Santa Clara (11-5, 2-1) is favored to repeat as champion of the conference tournament because it will be played on its home court in March.
Santa Clara’s best player is Chris Lane, the conference’s premier point guard. Jens Gordon, most valuable player of last season’s tournament, is another returning starter.
USD probably will play without starting guard Efrem Leonard, who has a sore left ankle.
