Robby Weiss of Pepperdine upset Scott Melville of USC, the nation’s No. 1-ranked collegian, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, in the final of the Adidas Invitational tennis tournament at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.
The match had been scheduled for the previous Saturday at Grand Champions in Indian Wells but was rained out.
The victory gave Weiss an automatic wild-card entry into the Newsweek Champions Cup tournament Feb. 29-March 6 at Grand Champions. Boris Becker and Stephan Edberg head the field.
