Television has been blamed for increased violence, growing illiteracy and a decline in physical fitness in its audience. But there is another side. Some of our finer programs have informed and inspired TV watchers to take positive action. For example, viewers of the value-oriented “Starman” series, distressed by the untimely death of the show, organized Spotlight Starman and are sponsoring events across the nation and in Canada to benefit Literacy Volunteers of America. One of the last “Starman” shows was about illiteracy and fans were moved to help solve this problem. Concerned and caring people can be motivated by quality programming on TV.
