Already the excuses are surfacing for “Broadcast News’ ” failure to impress the connoisseurs. In truth, the film looks like cheap advertising next to Bertolucci’s masterpiece.
“Broadcast News” didn’t come up empty-handed at the Golden Globes because of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s ignorance “about the American TV news industry,” as Nikki Finke so cautiously suggested (“ ‘Emperor’ Reigns at Golden Globes,” Jan. 25).
It didn’t win anything because the association apparently knows a good film when it sees one.
For those behind the super-hyping of “Broadcast News”: isn’t it enough that you can choke money out of (chumps) like me for a piece of bubble-gum satire? Must you have an award for it as well?
