County Doctors Return to Work
Residents and interns at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center are returning to work, union leaders announced today. Jill Mines, spokeswoman for the Joint Council of Interns and Residents, representing about 800 resident doctors at County-USC, told the Board of Supervisors that picketing would end immediately and the union leaders will return to the bargaining table Wednesday.
The interns and residents have objected to county plans to turn over a portion of the hospital system to private interests. County hospital nurses, meanwhile, pressed their demands for more pay at a supervisorial hearing, but a motion to grant them their requests failed to pass.
