LONDON — A 22-year-old British woman has become the world’s first recipient of a heart-lung transplant to have a baby, a health official said on Friday.
Debbie Leonard, who received a heart-lung transplant in July, 1985, gave birth to a 5-pound, 14-ounce boy at Hillingdon Hospital, west of London.
“(It’s) certainly a miracle baby for me,” Leonard said after her 10-hour labor, which doctors described as “very normal.”
Leonard, a travel agency worker, was born with a hole in her heart and could not walk more than 450 feet without stopping for breath before her operation.
