Henry Kaufman, chief economist at Salomon Bros., called for the creation of a single regulatory agency to oversee all the world’s major financial markets. The influential economist said existing regulatory boards were not sufficient to cope with the instability and globalization of the key financial markets. “It requires a new official body,” Kaufman said. “Even today we don’t have full control over our markets because we are linked (globally).” Kaufman said he would leave the investment banking firm by April to open a consulting firm.
