Local News in Brief : 2 Trailers Destroyed in Santa Clarita Blaze

An early-morning fire and explosion in a Santa Clarita trailer park Friday destroyed two mobile homes, Fire Department officials said.
The blaze, which broke out about 2:40 a.m. and caused an estimated $81,300 in damage, was caused by an electrical short in the wiring of one of the mobile homes, Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Mike Brownlie said.
The explosion was touched off when flames ignited some gunpowder used in an antique gun, Brownlie said.
An unidentified resident of one of the mobile homes was awakened by the odor of smoke, awoke his 5-year-old son and ran outside to alert his neighbors, Brownlie said.
His neighbors--a mother and her teen-age son--escaped before their home also went up in flames, Brownlie said. However, three cats left inside died.
The two families left homeless were given shelter by the American Red Cross, he said. Twenty-three firefighters battled the flames and contained the fire in about 20 minutes, Brownlie said.
