Clement Chen Jr., 58, the first architect allowed a joint international venture in the People’s Republic of China. The joint venture was the 528-room Jianguo Hotel in Beijing, built in 1982. Chen was named in 1984 as adviser to the National Committee on Hotel Development in China. A native of Shanghai, Chen came to the United States in 1949. His other projects included Holiday Inns in San Francisco’s Chinatown and in Palo Alto, Pasadena, Hong Kong and Singapore. Chen’s firm, Clement Chen & Associates of San Francisco, is building a hotel in Xian, China. In Hillsborough, Calif., on Friday after a heart attack.
