A 1709 Stradivari violin is expected to top the world record price for a musical instrument, held by another Stradivari, by fetching more than $740,000 at a London auction later this month. Sotheby’s auctioneers told Reuters that the Marie Hall violin, named after the virtuoso violinist, was sold for $40,000 in 1968. The violin will be auctioned in London on March 31, when it is expected to top the current record of $740,000 held by another Stradivari violin, the 1716 Colossus, which was auctioned last year.
