Chinese and Vietnamese ships exchanged fire near disputed islands in the South China Sea, and each side accused the other of firing first, news reports said. The exchange took place near the Spratly Islands, a group of islets and reefs claimed by Vietnam, China and the Philippines. The incident prompted protests from both Hanoi and Beijing.
