WASHINGTON — The U.S. Customs Service announced Friday that authorities will begin arresting and prosecuting anyone caught entering the country with illegal drugs, no matter how small the amount.
Previously, those caught crossing the border with small amounts of drugs sometimes were allowed to pay fines and were released to avoid clogging courts with relatively minor cases.
The program is to begin at midnight Monday. As announced earlier, customs agents also will seize the passports of those caught with drugs.
