Bangladesh President Hussain Mohammed Ershad appointed a new Cabinet, naming longtime political ally Moudad Ahmed as prime minister. Officials said Ershad named the new Cabinet in an effort to streamline the government after parliamentary elections earlier this month that were marred by violence and an opposition boycott. Ershad swore in the new Cabinet ministers amid tight security. Foreign Minister Humayun Rashid Chowdhury and Finance Minister Mohammed Abdul Munim kept their Cabinet posts.
