The State : Eye Drops Blind Woman

The FBI and the federal Food and Drug Administration are probing an incident in which a nurse was blinded by eye drops contaminated with a caustic chemical. “Her left eye looks like it melted and her right eye looks like it’s covered with white glue,” said Richard Critchlow, an attorney for Aerial Van Zee Miller, 34, of Fairfax in Marin County. Critchlow said 80% of Miller’s left cornea and 60% of her right cornea were destroyed, and doctors do not know if she will ever recover her sight. An FDA spokesman said no recall of Abbott Laboratories’ Clear Eyes will be ordered, unless investigation shows the incident was not isolated.
